Dayton 3D Printing Meetup, Thursday--2 Apr at 7:00PM

No Foolin', the next Dayton 3D Printing Meetup at FabSpace is scheduled for ThursdayApr 2ndMeetings occur on the First Thursday of the month at 7:00PM. The location is at The Old Yellow Cab / FabSpace 700 E 4th St. Dayton, OH

Last month was really exciting talking about 3D printing at the short fuse AFRL Makerfest. This month the challenge is for printer owners coming to the Meetup is to produce the GE Jet Engine desktop model. There is an awesome set of instructions and we have two more-or-less confirmed prints. They won't generate much thrust, but the models are printable and include some great details.

A couple tips for printing BIG.--Time: Be prepared for hours of machine time, especially if you add multiple parts to the prints. --PLA: New formulations have very little expansion to cause curls compared with ABS. --Settings: Plastic extruders can and do fail during long prints. Tweak temperatures and retraction for the material and test on smaller prints.--Bonus: A bad SD card, power failure, or computer update restart can just ruin your day!

Fun at the Columbus Idea Foundry and FabSpace 3D Printer Meetings

We attended two 3D Printer meetings this month. One at the Columbus Idea Foundry and the other at FabSpace in Dayton.

The meeting in Columbus had a large turnout with several varieties of printers (RepRaps, Deltabots, Makerbots, Printrbots, etc), scanners, a 3D pen, among other technologies. It was interesting to see all of the modifications to the printers and learn more about 3D printing from other hobbyists. This monthly meeting has been going on for a few years and has many regular attendees, as well as some newcomers.

The meeting in Dayton  is just getting started. It'll be exciting to see where they'll be a few years down the road. It was fun to meet someone new to the field of 3D Printing. And as always, it is cool to see what other members are building with their printers.

I printed a NASA wrench for the meeting. The wrench didn't have moving parts, but it was good to have the printer demonstrating its capabilities! One of guys at the meeting made some modifications to the wrench and was able to get it working.
